Professional Handlers

Certifying to Use a Dog In Your Professional Practice

If you are a professional wanting to incorporate your dog into your practice, please keep in mind the following when considering joining the Project Canine therapy dog program.

Key Points

  1. Project Canine’s program is designed to prepare handlers and their dogs who want to volunteer for 1–2 hours per week maximum to support visitors at various facilities and locations. Our training is not designed to teach you how to work with dogs and clients or students for extended work days in an educational or clinical setting.

  2. If you need a therapy dog certification for your place of work, our program may work for you; however, we do not teach you how to create therapeutic outcomes with your dog. To learn more about incorporating your dog into your work for therapeutic outcomes, please see the resources list to the right.

  3. Our liability insurance covers volunteer activities only. We do have a connection for low-cost insurance for professionals working with their dogs as therapy dogs. This is available for Project Canine certified therapy dog teams only and the information will be provided to teams wanting to use their dog in professional environments after certification is completed.
